内容記述 | This paper discusses the academic preparation university students receive in Japan before going abroad, and to what extent it sets them up for success in foreign learning environments. The hypothesis is that not preparing students adequately in English for Academic Purposes (EAP), even high proficiency English language learners, could leave them overwhelmed when they join overseas study programmes. In order to test the hypothesis, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a group of Japanese students studying at a UK university. The same students were interviewed a second time, after a gap of seven months, to note any changes in their perception of their study experience. Preliminary findings indicate that EAP is not fully understood or supported in Japan and that changes are required in EAP instruction and institutional support for it. | |||||
