The term diversity is a concept that has multiple facets; it includes many elements, has horizontal and vertical axis and also contains multiple dimensions. Its meaning and implication are also different according to the context. Firstly, the theme of the history and present situation of how the concept of diversity and diversification has been discussed in higher education, using literature from Japan and North America and Europe. Secondly, the arguments of biologists are refered and the term “diversity” will be reconsidered. Finally, based on the findings, the perspective and attitude that a student counselor needs to obtain in order to realize the diversity will be examined. “Diversity” is a dynamic process in which causality and synchronicity meet and create new values.
